ALMA DEUTSCHER – CHILD PRODIGY
Alma Deutscher, born in 2005, is a composer, violinist and pianist. She began playing the piano when she was two years old and the violin when she was three. Soon afterwards, she started improvising simple melodies on the piano. Her attempts at composition began at age four, when she began writing an opera about a pirate called Don Alonzo. When she was six, she composed her first full piano sonata, and at seven, a very short opera called The Sweeper of Dreams. Various compositions for the violin, piano, viola and voice followed, as well as works for chamber ensembles, that were commissioned by music festivals in England and Switzerland.
Aged nine, Alma wrote a concerto for violin and orchestra which was premiered in January 2015 by the Oviedo Fiarmonia with Alma as soloist, together with her first symphonic piece, Dance of the Solent Mermaids. Alma also played her violin concerto with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Welsh National Opera Orchestra.
Aged ten, Alma finished her most ambitious project to date, a full length opera, Cinderella. The chamber version of the opera received its world premiere in Israel in 2015. And the world premiere of the full version of the opera will take place in Vienna in December 2016. As a soloist on both violin and piano, Alma has appeared in England, Germany, Austria, Italy, Uruguay, Spain, USA, Japan, Israel and Switzerland.
Alma’s first CD, The Music of Alma Deutscher, was released in 2013, featuring a selection of her chamber compositions up until the age of eight. She has appeared in printed and broadcast media around the world, including numerous radio and television programes such as the Ellen Degeneres Show in the US. Her YouTube channel, which has more than three million views, features a selection of her compositions, performances and media appearances.
